Start with the concentration

A syringe marking does not identify how many milligrams it contains. On the U-100 scale, 25 markings represent 0.25 mL. The mass in that volume depends entirely on the concentration of the solution.

The reverse calculation

Divide the entered U-100 markings by 100 to obtain mL. Multiply that volume by the concentration in mg/mL to obtain mg. The calculator also displays the equivalent micrograms and the exact fraction used in the calculation.

Why a saved conversion can become wrong

Suppose a solution contains 2 mg/mL: 25 U-100 markings represent 0.5 mg. At 4 mg/mL, those same markings represent 1 mg. Recheck a saved calculation whenever the labelled strength or preparation changes. Never treat a previous result as a universal conversion.

Markings are not biological IU

This reverse calculation applies to volume represented by a U-100 barrel. It does not convert biological international units into mass or determine an insulin dose. Use the units and administration instructions supplied for the actual medicine.
